Medica Instrument Manufacturing Company launched its own Media Preparator under the EQUICLAVE brand, the stage is set for the company to prove its mettle against international brands and to rule the roost, first on domestic soil and then on foreign lands.
Being the first in India to manufacture Media Preparators for the benefit of their own brethren who have until now been shelling out huge amounts to import such preparators from abroad, the company is doing India proud and setting the right precedent for other Indian companies to become self-reliant as well as globally competitive.
A media preparator is equipment, which allows preparation, mixing, sterilization, and dispensing of media. Traditionally, media has been prepared by mixing, agitating, and pouring into beakers as per the required quantity; after which, it is sterilized in an autoclave. Post sterilization, it is removed & allowed to cool in a clean room. Once it has reached a pouring temperature of about 50 °C, it is transferred into a clean bench & dispensed onto Petri dishes, tubes, or jars. Thus, the entire process is operator dependent. The manual media preparation process has several disadvantages: It is difficult to ensure homogeneity & uniformity when preparing large volume media. It is easily prone to contamination due to manual intervention at every step of preparation, increased number of glassware used, and due to the fact that it is handled manually, post-sterilization.
The autoclave used for media preparation indicates the temperature of steam/water inside the chamber & not the temperature of the media inside the flask. Hence, there is every possibility that the temperature inside the flask may not have attained the sterilization temperature. There would be considerable lag time to factor in.
When the flask or beakers are removed and allowed to cool in air or cooled by pouring tap water on them, uniform cooling does not occur. Besides, the risk of contamination also increases. Since the media is sterilized, one cannot counter check the pouring temperature for risk of contaminating the media. It involves operator-dependent guesswork - which is not desirable. Thus, the reliability and repeatability of the manual process is always doubtful. A media preparator, on the other hand, eliminates all these hassles and provides dependable and reproducible results.
The EQUICLAVE Media Preparator is a boon to any laboratory. It is basically an autoclave with special features for handling of liquid media, broth, or any other media. The media is poured directly into a special container in the autoclave, which also has a magnetic stirrer. The media mixes in this, the temperature rises to a user-settable sterilizing temperature, holds for the desired time, then cools rapidly to the media pouring temperature between 45 ºC & 65 ºC; and then, without opening the autoclave, the desired volume of media can be dispensed directly onto Petri plates – placed in a clean bench – by an external peristaltic pump; and all this, while constant stirring of the media is taking place to prevent solidification. This entire process is automatic. The user has to just feed in parameters as per his requirements.
